Blockchain, Digital Workforce Cited as Increasing Adoption of Next Generation Supply Chain Innovations

$

MHI recently announced the release of the fifth in a series of MHI Annual Industry Reports developed in collaboration with Deloitte Consulting LLP. The 2018 MHI Annual Industry Report, titled “Overcoming Barriers to NextGen Supply Chain Adoption” provides new insights into trends and technologies that are having a dramatic business impact on supply chains, their security and the people who run them.

Manufacturing and supply chain professionals are facing many challenges but, according to the report, the top ones are increasing customer demands on supply chains (73 percent) and hiring qualified workers (64 percent).

Eleven technologies are working together to create next-generation supply chains that can meet these challenges because they are digital, on-demand and always-on. Eight out of ten survey respondents believe these supply chains will be the predominant model within just five years.

This year’s report provides updates on the innovative technologies MHI predicted would have the most potential to transform supply chains four years ago when the MHI Annual Industry Report was launched. The 2018 report includes two new technologies (Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain) that are rapidly emerging. The report also covers the potential of these technologies to disrupt the industry as well as their adoption rates and common barriers to adoption. The eleven technologies covered in the report are:

Blockchain
Robotics and automation
Predictive analytics
Internet of Things
Artificial Intelligence
Driverless vehicles and drones
Wearable and mobile technology
Inventory and network optimization
Sensors and automatic identification
Cloud computing and storage
3D printing

"Early adopters are successfully combining NextGen supply chain technologies to improve speed and agility and increase efficiency and visibility,” said George Prest, CEO of MHI.

Potential to disrupt and create competitive advantage
The top technologies respondents say can be a source of either disruption or competitive advantage are:
Robotics and automation (65 percent, up from 61 percent in 2017)
Predictive analytics (62 percent, up from 57 percent in 2017)
The Internet-of-Things (IoT) (59 percent, up from 55 percent in 2017)
Artificial Intelligence (53 percent, new category in 2018)
Driverless vehicles & drones (52 percent, up from 30 percent in 2015)

Adoption Rates
Cloud computing and storage has the highest current adoption rate at 57 percent. Adoption is expected to grow to 91 percent over the next five years. Inventory and Network Optimization, now at 44 percent adoption is expected to grow to 90 percent over the next five years.

Over the same time frame, Predictive Analytics is expected to reach an 82 percent adoption rate, followed by IoT at 79 percent, Robotics and Automation at 73 percent, Blockchain at 54 percent, Driverless Vehicles and Drones at 50 percent and Artificial Intelligence at 47 percent.

Top Barriers to Adoption
The top three barriers to adoption of these technologies are:
1. Making the business case for NextGen supply chain investments
2. Tackling the supply chain skills gap and workforce shortage
3. Building trust and security in digital, always-on supply chains

Supply Chain Talent Gap
To implement any of these technologies, firms need access to a skilled and increasingly digital supply chain workforce. This has been a theme in all five annual reports and the talent gap is growing as the adoption of these technologies increases.
The top critical skills needed to compete in the next-generation supply chain, according to the survey are strategic problem solving (49 percent), analytics/modeling/visualization (43 percent) and general business acumen and cross-functional knowledge (38 percent).

“Algorithms, automation, sensors, big data and artificial intelligence are dramatically changing what supply chain talent looks like, how to find it and retain it,” added Prest.

Emerging Trend - Blockchain as a Solution to Supply Chain Cybersecurity and Transparency Challenges
When it comes to cybersecurity, the sophistication of hackers and “threat actors” is the biggest risk (44 percent), followed by the lack of awareness of the threat within the organization (40 percent) and poor cybersecurity practices among suppliers (37 percent).

As cybersecurity concerns grow, the demand for transparency at every level of the supply chain is skyrocketing as consumers increasingly expect full information about the origin and history of the products they consume.

Blockchain’s unparalleled ability to enable transparent yet controlled data sharing in a way that is extremely reliable, efficient, and highly-encrypted provides a powerful and robust platform to tackle some of today’s toughest supply chain challenges, while also providing an unmatched level of cybersecurity. This is where blockchain can be a huge supply chain differentiator.

This year's report introduces the topic of Blockchain and examines how it may be the answer to many cybersecurity, trust and transparency challenges of supply chains.

The biggest barrier for blockchain adoption is that very few people understand what it is or how it can realistically be used in their operations. Only 11 percent of respondents believe they have a working understanding of blockchain technology and how it might be applicable to supply chains.

Adoption of blockchain in supply chains stands at 5 percent, but it is projected to jump to 54 percent over the next five years.

Firms across industries can benefit from using blockchain in their supply chains. Automotive manufacturers, food producers and pharmaceutical manufacturers, among others, can take advantage of the immutable and transparent nature of blockchain to track product origin and quickly and discreetly recall products that may have been produced with a defect, helping to minimize brand damage, costs, and customer inconvenience.

The report also provides real-world case studies of NextGen supply chain technologies and recommendations for leaders for developing strategies to implement these innovations.

"The time is now to think big, but start small and act fast. You don't need to invest a lot to start testing these technologies," said Scott Sopher, principal and leader of the global supply chain practice at Deloitte Consulting LLP.

"While the transition to NextGen supply chains is complex, inaction is not a strategy. Ignoring these important developments may leave your supply chain at a severe disadvantage in the future," added Prest.

The findings in this report are based on survey responses from 1,100 manufacturing and supply chain industry leaders from a wide range of industries. Half of respondents hold executive-level positions such as CEO, Vice President, General Manager, or Department Head.  Participating companies range in size from small to large, with 47 percent reporting annual sales in excess of $100 million, and 10 percent reporting annual sales of $10 billion or more.

COLUMBUS, Ind. (April 24, 2018) – Toyota Forklifts, the leading forklift brand in North America, today announced the launch of an integrated fork scale option for its electric walkie pallet jack model. The new scale is designed to eliminate the need for floor scales and the time and effort spent using them. It’s a great solution for any business weighing products for legal or business reasons.

The new integrated fork scale option is available in both a conventional and Legal-For-Trade version. The Legal-For-Trade option includes a correction sensing system designed to calculate the weight, even when the load wheels are not level, providing a solution for back of truck checks when customers have uneven floors or other poor surfaces.

“Our new integrated fork scale option gives customers the ability to weigh loads with the same piece of equipment that picks them up,” said Director of Product Planning, Technical Services and Warranty Cesar Jimenez. “Our new scale calculates the overall load weight by measuring cumulative weight as pallets are loaded into a trailer or container, helps confirm weights while loading shipping containers to meet the new bill of lading requirements, and allows drivers to quickly see if the weight on a bill of lading is correct to help reduce under-charging for freight.”

The first factory-installed solution of its kind, Toyota’s new integrated fork scale option retains its factory fork profile and height for better pallet entry and exit. The new scale also features a Bluetooth Enabled option to send weight information to a warehouse management system, tablet or handheld terminal, a serial port option for customers who want to add a printer and a cold storage option for food storage applications.

Toyota Forklifts new fork scale option is available to order now.

Lakewood, NJ – May 4, 2018 – UNEX Manufacturing, Inc., a trusted industry leader in providing innovative order picking solutions, introduces the UNEX Configurator, an easy-to-use design tool that generates a 3D image and bill of materials for users’ custom carton flow solutions. The online Configurator quickly and easily lets users configure a Span-Track solution from the ground up by themselves, accelerating the turn-around time for custom-fit materials handling equipment that can speed fulfillment and throughput in the warehouse, distribution center or manufacturing line.

“We have found that many of our customers want to design a UNEX solution themselves to ensure the equipment will fit into their environment to keep their processes flowing,” said Brian C. Neuwirth, VP Sales & Marketing, UNEX Manufacturing. “Using the Configurator design tool, material handling experts can design the equipment that fits their own unique specifications, making an engineer’s job easier while providing instant 3D images for visual confirmation of the design.”

Users begin to create their designs with the UNEX Configurator by inputting the dimensions to match their existing racks, along with the name of the pallet rack beam manufacturer and type of upright needed. Next, the number of levels, types of rack and end-style are added to fill the racks. Users simply click on “send me my design” to receive their free 3D image with a bill of materials included. UNEX can generate a quote based on the design. Other products, besides Span-Track, will be added to the Configurator in the future for even more custom designs.

DEMATIC AUTOMATED GUIDED VEHICLE (AGV) RECEIVES UL SYSTEM SAFETY CERTIFICATION

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – May 7, 2018 – Dematic, a leading global supplier of integrated automated technology, software and services to optimize the supply chain, is pleased to announce Dematic AGVs are the first to receive UL certification to the UL 3100 Standard. UL (Underwriters Laboratories) performs safety testing and certification on a variety of products, facilities, processes and systems worldwide. Its standards are recognized by industry, government and consumers as third-party certification of safer operation.

As a member of UL’s Standards Technical Panel, Dematic participated in the development of UL 3100, a new safety standard specifically for AGVs. The requirements of UL 3100 call for a holistic system approach to evaluation, testing and certification to help ensure that the batteries, chargers and end products are protected against electric shock and fire. This includes evaluating and testing for enclosure strength, functional safety requirements, motor safety and protection against injury, performance and autonomous features.

“Developing UL 3100 is an important industry milestone for helping to ensure safer operation of AGVs,” said Francisco Martinez, UL's global director of Energy Systems and e-Mobility. “UL looks forward to continuing to support AGV industry innovations to accelerate market confidence and ultimately AGV market growth.”

“As a leader in the mobile automation industry, we are constantly looking for ways to ensure the safe, efficient operation of our AGVs,” said Tom Kaminski, Vice President of Mobile Automation at Dematic. “Being able to work with UL as a member of UL’s Standards Technical Panel to develop this new safety standard and to have a Dematic AGV awarded the first UL 3100 certification is an honor for us.”

UL 3100 applies to three main types of AGVs:
  • Industrial truck-based AGVs such as rider-less industrial trucks
  • Load bearing service AGVs such as those used in a service industry, which are intended to carry small loads
  • Non-load bearing service AGVs such as product re-ordering AGVs that are used to drive up and down grocery store aisles and reorder products depleted from shelves
UL’s vast experience and capabilities in evaluating and testing the safety of equipment and products helps Dematic achieve its goals and accelerates technological advancement in the industry. UL 3100 is expected to become a national consensus standard for AGVs by next year.

“Internally, this new UL 3100 certification provides an excellent methodology for us to better test our solutions,” added Kaminski. “For our customers, it’s another way to illustrate our commitment to AGV safety and to putting their interests first.”

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. (PRWEB) MAY 07, 2018 - With orders for TGW Logistics Group’s technological innovations, advanced goods-to-person solutions and extended service portfolio having significantly increased in the past 12 months, the company has announced the opening of two new offices in the U.S. to deliver even higher levels of customer service. Strategically located in Seattle and Atlanta, these new locations join the company’s existing operations in Grand Rapids and Spring Lake, Michigan, and a 170,000 square foot manufacturing expansion—also in Spring Lake, Michigan.

“Our expanded footprint in the U.S. will allow us to even better serve our customers nationwide,” says Mario Herndl, CEO of TGW Systems. “Here in the U.S., our order increase over the previous year vastly exceeded our expectations, and we have increased our workforce by more than 35%. These two additional locations enable our team to be even closer to customers on the west and east coasts.”

The rapid growth of TGW’s American subsidiary is no coincidence, he continues, noting that the company’s innovative handling solutions are designed to meet any customer needs in the core markets of apparel, grocery and general merchandise. To that end, both locations will support sales, project quoting and specialized engineering activities, as well as house controls specialists, remote service teams and technical personnel.

“As a self-contained solutions provider and system integrator, we have focused on bringing innovative technologies tailored to the American market. Everything our customers require for their material handling needs is provided by TGW, including all components,” Herndl adds. “Adding these two locations is just another step in our lengthy list of planned investments in our U.S. operations throughout this year.

“We are excited to establish these new locations for our expanded teams,” adds Alex Ruch, Director of Human Resources for TGW Systems. “Both cities not only give us a footprint closer to current and prospective customers, but also represent two major metropolitan areas with strong engineering and logistics communities. Further, these two regions are home to top-tier universities that are continuously graduating world-class talent familiar with cutting-edge technologies.”

Having access to that base of potential new hires will help TGW accomplish its hiring goals of adding another 100 employees over the next 12 months, Ruch notes. (Open positions are posted at http://www.tgw-group.com/en/jobs)

Over the course of two hours, a team of 20 employees collected 229 pieces of trash and built 450 linear feet of fence around the sand dunes.

“Corporate social responsibility extends beyond the four walls of our facility in Summerville,” said David Brown, director of human resources at KION North America.  “Our intent with the KION NA Cares initiative is to give our employees the opportunity to be stewards of their community.”

Future KION NA Cares events are already scheduled including volunteer teams to serve at the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston and Lowcountry Food Bank, as well as a stuff-the-truck event to benefit Dorchester Habitat for Humanity.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN – May 9, 2018 – Dematic, a leading global supplier of integrated automated technology, software and services to optimize the supply chain, today introduces its Robotic Piece Picking Module designed to improve accuracy and productivity during the last touch — the point where items of varying sizes and shapes are processed by hand — of the fulfillment process.

Traditionally, the last touch has been a manual process, but the Robotic Piece Picking Module completes the automation of the fulfillment chain. The module selects, grips, lifts and places individual items of varying sizes into containers or bins to complete a shipment. It delivers pick rates of 600–1,200 items per hour ensuring on time delivery of a wide variety of SKUs, such as personal care items, cosmetics, packaged food, office supplies and variety of other package types, shapes and fragility.

“Distribution centers are facing increased pressure to find reliable, qualified and available labor,” said Crystal Parrott, Vice President, Robotics Center of Excellence, Dematic. “Our robotics offerings, such as the Robotic Piece Picking Module, help warehouse managers streamline processes through advanced technology and software that operate 24/7 with extraordinary accuracy, drilling down labor costs and improving fulfillment efficiency. The key to success is in identifying the system solution that meets the unique needs of a customer’s application.”

The Robotic Piece Picking Module is part of a suite of automated solutions built around process improvements, robotic technology, vision and software within the Dematic Robotics Center of Excellence.

“We are committed to solving the toughest logistics challenges by investing in the development of feature-rich modules using advanced technologies and pairing that with the global integration expertise of Dematic for successful project execution,” continued Parrott.

NEW RAYMOND LEGAL-FOR-TRADE SOLUTION LETS USERS WEIGH PRODUCT ON FORKS WITH PRECISION

GREENE, N.Y., May 9, 2018 — The latest solution from The Raymond Corporation increases productivity on every load by weighing product directly on the walkie pallet forks. The Raymond® Model 8210 — with factory-installed, fully integrated mobile weigh scale options — is available in two configurations: a legal-for-trade configuration in adherence to the National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) or in a non-NTEP configuration.

The NTEP is administered by the National Conference on Weights and Measures, which has established a uniform set of criteria and test procedures for the evaluation of commercial weighing and measuring devices. NTEP scales are designed for commercial weight sensing and must be certified by the appropriate local U.S. governing office.

“By using mobile scales on these robust, durable pallet trucks, operators can quickly verify inbound and outbound freight, and greatly improve order accuracy and create savings,” says Erica Moyer, product manager for pallet trucks and stackers at Raymond. “These solutions are ideal for applications that weigh or measure bulk materials for distribution, as they provide increased productivity and accuracy for shipment bill of lading and order picking fulfillment.”

These scales measure the amount of weight directly on the pallet truck forks and communicate — using either serial or Bluetooth connections — that weight to the operator through a LCD display called the Scale Indicator. NTEP scales are accurate within 0.1 percent of the maximum calibrated load weight.

The system consists of two parts: a scale mounted in the tractor fork skins, and weight-sensing load cells installed over a modified fork frame. The system is powered through the truck battery and includes IP65-protected electrical components for work in wet environments. Optional cold storage conditioning enables operation in cold environments down to -4 degrees Fahrenheit.

GREENE, N.Y.,  May 18, 2018 — For over 25 years, the Youth Apprenticeship Program has been a part of The Raymond Corporation’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and encouraging young talent to explore career paths in manufacturing. Coordinated through the Broome-Tioga Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), the program provides a hands-on, experiential approach to learning for junior and senior high school students.

On May 17, 2018, Raymond recognized three high school seniors from Greene High School who spent two years contributing to the Youth Apprenticeship Program at its headquarters in Greene, N.Y. The apprenticeship program at Raymond allowed the students to experience what careers are available in the material handling industry. The student apprentices — Coy Austin, Gray Reid, and Dominic Williams — showcased the projects they participated in and any outcomes they achieved. They also discussed their new skills acquired as a result of the program, highlighting increased knowledge of corporate logistics, lean manufacturing, IT, and engineering.

“As the manufacturing skills gap widens, we hope this apprenticeship helped the students see the breadth of career paths available in this profession and gain the skill sets necessary to succeed in the future,” said Heidi Foster, coordinator of the Youth Apprenticeship Program, Raymond. “With today’s e-commerce pressures to meet faster supply chain response times, finding skilled labor will be critical to keeping companies competitive.”
