BEUMER has developed a film that allows for quick and easy opening without the use of tools

0
0
BEUMER Group's efficient stretch film packaging system, BEUMER stretch hood A, can be used in various different industries. The systems supplier can now provide the system with a newly developed easy opening hood: this worldwide innovation allows employees in retail stores and logistics centres to quickly and easily remove the film when unpacking or repacking the goods, without the use of any cutting tools.

There had not been a packaging system for pallets on the market that did not require the operator to open the film with a cutting tool. This conventional opening method poses the risk of hurting yourself or your colleagues, or damaging the product. This can be expensive for companies and, of course, increases the risk of accidents. The Easy Opening hood makes it easier for employees in logistics centres, while saving a lot of time. To achieve this, BEUMER, together with a well-known film supplier, developed a technology that allows you to open the film along a precise tear line in the centre, without affecting the safety function of the stretch hood. The user can open the film quickly and easily, with no tools required. This considerably increases unpacking productivity. After collaborating closely with its film supplier for decades, BEUMER, the machine and systems supplier, had generated this idea for film preparation.

ImmERge Labs’ new CPR Virtual Teachable Moment At American Crane & Equipment Corporation

0
0
(PRWEB) AUGUST 09, 2017 - American Crane recently had the opportunity to open their facility to the ImmERge Labs, an Upstart company spun out of the University of Pennsylvania, to introduce their employees to some of the newest and most innovative technology being applied in the medical field today.

After recently completing their official CPR certification training, American Crane’s employees had the chance to experience what would happen in a real life situation where they had to perform CPR through ImmERge Labs’ new CPR Virtual Teachable Moment? program.

Selected American Crane’s employees, including members of their safety committee, are required to participate in and complete official CPR training to renew their certifications every 2 years. In June, this group completed the training and certification. Thus the timing could not have been better for ImmERge Labs to share their innovative technology with the American Crane.

This experience allowed employees to use a virtual reality head set and save the life of a civilian in a realistic environment. The program renders participants motion from a slight movement of their fingertips, to a full body 360 degree turn- in a virtual digital setting.

Since this technology was such a hands on experience, it really ingrained the CPR the users’ minds and will help them so that they won’t forget what to do if they are ever actually in a similar real life experience.

It is important to know that the Virtual Teachable Moment ? does NOT replace CPR certification training at all, but truly compliments and enhances it. It gives users the chance to engage a simulated emergency and gain a real life experience responding to a sudden cardiac arrest scenario. It provides participants the opportunity to apply their CPR training and also reinforces the lessons learned during CPR certification.

Feedback on the ImmERge Labs Virtual Teachable Moment was extremely positive. Everyone who tried it thought it was extremely helpful, very interesting, and an overall great experience.

“ImmERge Labs' sudden cardiac arrest virtual reality (SCA VR) application is not only designed to enhance a participant’s CPR skills, but also to improve emotional readiness in case they are ever a bystander in a real-life SCA event,” said Marion Leary, Founder of ImmERge Labs and Director of Innovation Research at Penn’s Center for Resuscitation Science. “We’re constantly working to provide forward-thinking organizations, like ACECO, the VR tools they need to break into the future of emergency preparedness.”

American Crane is excited to see how this technology will evolve even more in the future and how they can incorporate it into their own training programs.

Hänel Storage Systems Named Finalist for Pittsburgh Technology Council’s Tech 50 Innovator of the Year Award

0
0
Pittsburgh, PA – August 10, 2017 – Hänel Storage Systems, a leader in the manufacture and integration of automated vertical storage units, has been named as a Tech 50 Awards Finalist by the Pittsburgh Technology Council in the Manufacturing Innovator of the Year category.

The Pittsburgh Technology Council’s annual Tech 50 Awards recognize southwestern Pennsylvania’s most successful, innovative and thought-leading technology companies, which have become the backbone of Pittsburgh’s innovation economy.  The awards represent transformative technology centers of excellence with tech companies at all stages of growth.

Hänel is one of six finalists for Manufacturing Innovator of the Year, also known as the Kurt J. Lesker III Award for Excellence.

“Each year, the Council canvasses the region for the most distinguished public and private technology-oriented companies, and the Tech 50 awards honor those companies that demonstrated the strongest growth and advancement in product or sales success, corporate citizenship, job growth and retention, industry achievement and innovative product or technology,” said Audrey Russo, President and CEO, Pittsburgh Technology Council.  “We are especially excited to announce the category winners at the awards gala this Fall.  This year, we are taking a closer look at how the finalists are propelling technology excellence not only in Pittsburgh, but around the world.  It is truly a night to honor our region’s technology companies and the contributions they have made to our economic vitality.”

“Hänel is honored to be a finalist for Manufacturing Innovator of the Year,” said Brian Cohen, Chief Executive of Hänel Storage Systems.  “We enjoy being a member of the Pittsburgh Technology Council and are honored to be considered for such a prestigious award.  There are so many innovative technology companies in the region, so the competition is significant and we wish all of the companies that are being considered much luck and success.”

Hänel is a finalist for this award due to its automated storage solution for hospital operating rooms (OR) and sterile processing departments (SPD).  These areas are commonly out of space because there is no room for the departments to expand, and existing space is often used inefficiently.  This leads to disorganized supplies, inefficient processes and poor inventory management.  Without properly organized and sterilized instruments, patients can be at risk for surgical site infections, and surgeries can be delayed while nurses search for the appropriate tools.  Hänel’s solution solves each of these issues.

Tech 50 winners will be announced on October 12, 2017 at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh.

About Tech 50
Since 1996, the Pittsburgh Technology Council has celebrated the most successful and innovative companies in Southwestern Pennsylvania with the Tech 50 Awards.  This annual award acknowledges the success of organizations in health IT, life sciences, manufacturing, consumer products, consulting services and other innovative technologies.  For more information on Tech 50 and all the finalists, visit www.pghtech.org/tech50.aspx.  For more information on the Pittsburgh Technology Council, visit www.pghtech.org.

About Hänel Storage Systems
Founded in Germany in 1953, Hänel’s North American headquarters has been located in Pittsburgh, PA since it was established in 1984.  Hänel Storage Systems specializes in the design and engineering of Rotomat® vertical storage carousels and Lean-Lift® Vertical Lift Modules for a wide range of industries and applications.  Hänel provides sales, service and technical support to North and South America through a network of factory-trained channel partners and service providers.

Introduced in 1957, the Rotomat® Vertical Carousel is based on the Ferris Wheel principal.  Inventory is stored in a series of carriers that rotate within an enclosed unit and are accessed at a single opening.  This vertical “goods to the user” concept improves productivity, lowers costs, increases security and saves valuable floor space.

Introduced in 1994, the Lean-Lift® Vertical Lift Module stores inventory on trays that are automatically measured for height each time they enter the unit. A vertical extractor places each tray within the unit in a location that maximizes available storage space.  Trays can be equipped with dividers, totes, bins and specialized holders to store any type of inventory.

MHI’s Overhead Alliance Launches New Virtual Reality Crane Game

0
0
The Overhead Alliance (OA), a marketing vehicle for trade association MHI’s overhead lifting product groups, will launch an interactive, virtual reality (VR) game in September, designed to engage students and others keen to learn about the technologies they represent.

OA serves as a commercial vehicle, promoting the collective interests of the Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA), Hoist Manufacturers Institute (HMI) and Monorail Manufacturers Association (MMA). It is principally challenged with raising the profile of overhead lifting equipment above competing material handling technologies.

To that end, OA communicates through a myriad of mediums to reach target audiences. They developed a new virtual reality crane game, which is a fun and educational experience that shows what it is like to operate an overhead crane. The game uses cutting edge technology that brings you inside a realistic manufacturing shop floor. It gives its users a 360-degree, real-life perspective inside the headset.

Karen Norheim, Executive Vice President at American Crane and Equipment Corporation, a CMAA member company, said: “With this game we hope to effectively educate users on overhead lifting. The advanced technology that the programmers used to create this life-like experience is incredible. Not only does the virtual reality seem extremely realistic, but the game helps users to learn about overhead lifting while having fun at the same time! It gives everyone the chance to take a step into a virtual crane world.”

Norheim explained that the intent is to harness the power and appeal of virtual reality to give audiences a memorable experience at the controls of an overhead crane. During the game, which should take players between 10 and 20 minutes to complete, there are different target paths that they can lift and move boxes through inside a bay.

Norheim added: “The concept creates a purpose to participation and will make it more challenging for the users. We hope that they will get a better understanding of what our equipment is and how it works. Technology has created an opportunity for us to create an environment close to what they would experience at a facility using overhead cranes and hoists. It’s a great way to allow them to see into our world—and hopefully they want to become part of it in real life.”

Eventually, the goal is to have the game available in three different options: virtual reality using Oculus Rift; PC using keyboard; and PC using an X-box controller. This will make it so that the game is not restricted to only those who have an Oculus Rift VR headset. In addition, we hope to have a version for the other major VR products available such as HTC Vive, Lenova and Microsoft.

The Overhead Alliance’s primary audience for the new game is those who have never before been exposed to overhead lifting, whether it be those in academia or adults who have been in the wider workplace for a period of time. Many might already have an appreciation of what other material handling equipment (say, a forklift truck) does, but less so an electric overhead traveling (EOT) crane or hoist.

The game is a combined effort of CMAA, HMI and MMA member companies in conjunction with Vern Shurtz and John Berryman from the Stratus Technology Group. It will be available on OverheadAlliance.org in September and select gaming portals later this year.

For an economical and sustainable operation, Aalborg Portland A/s therefore relies on alternative fuels and raw materials, in its Denmark lead plant, to ignite the calciner and the main burner. BEUMER Group supports the manufacturer with its AFR systems segment (alternative fuels and raw materials) and develops individual single-source solutions in order to efficiently convey, store and feed the differently composed materials. The core of these systems is represented by innovative Pipe Conveyors: The enclosed conveying systems ensure an environmentally safe, dust-free and low-energy transport of fuels and raw materials.

Aalborg Portland is a subsidiary of the Italian cement group Cementir S.p.A. This group of companies is one of the largest and leading manufacturers and exporters of this material world-wide. In addition to the main plant in Aalborg, Denmark, it has further production plants in China, Egypt, Malaysia, Italy, Turkey and the United States of America as well as numerous sales offices.

Secondary fuels instead of primary ones
The production of cement has always been one of the most energy-intensive operations. In order to avoid expensive primary fuels such as carbon, gas and oil, and to produce in more economic and sustainable way, Aalborg Portland has relied on alternative fuels for the incineration process in the calciner for several years.

"In 2014 we decided to optimise and enlarge the existing system", says Ole Strøm Hansen, project manager of Aalborg Portland. Until then the manufacturer transported the fuels to both calciners through long pneumatic conveying lines. However, the producer did not have an initially positive experience, as pneumatic conveying lines are extremely maintenance-intensive and also susceptible to breakdown. "In addition, we intended to increase the capacity of the existing conveying line to 20 tons per hour per calcinator", explained Hansen.

With the new concept, the Residue Derived Fuel (RDF) is transported for the calciner and the Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) to the main burner. The solution is to transport the alternative fuels from the storehouse to the rotary kiln area as well as the gravimetric feed of both the calciner and the main burner.

The decision was made to reduce the length of the pneumatic conveying line and to replace the remaining line by a mechanical transport system, but the manufacturer also wanted to install a completely new conveying line for the main burner feeding, with a capacity of up to ten tons per hour. "We evaluated different variants of mechanical transport systems", remembers Hansen. Finally, the Danish company opted for a single-source solution of BEUMER Group based on the innovative Pipe Conveyor technology.

Ideal solution for each case
In order to support producers of cement in the alternative fuels and raw materials field, BEUMER Group has set up a complete business segment dedicated to AFR systems. "Our know-how and our tailor-made systems permit us to offer an optimum support to our customers", says Tomas Hrala, project manager at BEUMER Group. "We have many years of good experience and we always consider customers' specifications". With this capability, the system provider is able to supply and install the whole chain from the acceptance and unloading of the delivery vehicle, up to the storing, conveying and feeding process of the solid alternative fuels for the specific user. The customer receives everything from one source, thus having a unique contact.

Pipe Conveyor as hub and pivot
"Due to the different grain sizes and the various compositions of these alternative fuels, it was necessary to develop an individual system solution for each line", explained Tomas Hrala. To enable the transport of the pre-processed fuels from the storehouse to the calciner and to the main burner, BEUMER Group supplied and installed respectively one Pipe Conveyor as the heart of these systems as well as the accompanying equipments. "This conveying technology is not only eco-friendly and requires low maintenance", describes Hrala. "Its enclosed type of construction protects the environment safely from material falling down and emissions. Another advantage is the lack of dust development on the running line". Due to its ability to navigate curves, considerably less transfer towers are required compared to other belt conveyors, allowing for a substantial cost savings to the customer. BEUMER Group can customise each system to the individual routing.

Efficient single-source system
The delivery of the oven-ready material is carried out in moving-floor trailers. The alternative fuels are unloaded and stored at the receiving station. Both lines receive the material/items transported by the moving floors modernised by BEUMER Group from the existing storehouse. All transport systems supplied and the accompanying equipments are intertwined to ensure steady fuel feeding. The Pipe Conveyor of the calciner has a diameter of 350 millimetres, a length of 135 metres and can transport up to 50 tons per hour to an intermediate hopper with a volume of 35 cubic metres. This hopper is equipped with an activator and two double discharge screw conveyors, and distributes the material in two feeding and pneumatic conveying lines to both calciners. The two new pneumatic conveying lines to the calciner with rotary vane feeders and blowers were completely dimensioned and supplied by BEUMER Group.

"However, during the constructive dimensioning of this system we were faced with a particular challenge", remembers Tomas Hrala, project manager of BEUMER. The buildings in which the calciners are placed include an additional part called penthouse. It supports, among others, the discharge station of the Pipe Conveyor, the intermediate hopper with the two double discharge screw conveyors and also both weigh belt feeders with the pneumatic conveying system. "From a static viewpoint, the penthouse had to be calculated trying to not exceed the available load application in the existing building", explains Hrala. "At the same time, the subjacent requested throughway for plant vehicles had to be ensured."

The heart of the line for the main burner is a Pipe Conveyor with a diameter of 200 mm and a length of 201 metres. It achieves a conveying capacity of twelve tons per hour and is equipped with a spillage scraper conveyor for minimising the cleaning, as well as a dedusting filter. The fuel feed of the moving floor in the storehouse to the Pipe Conveyor is carried out by a screw conveyor. The feeding system in the main burner building includes an intermediate hopper with a volume of ten cubic metres, also with activator and double discharge screw conveyor and a weigh belt feeder. In addition, there is a pneumatic conveying line with blower and rotary vane feeder.

"We are very pleased with both single-source systems", Ole Strøm Hansen of Aalborg Portland sums up. "The transport systems and the accompanying equipments are intertwined to ensure steady fuel feeding." Tomas Hrala continues, emphasising BEUMER Group's role: "We could again demonstrate that we have substantial competence with regard to the handling of alternative fuels in the cement industry and that we can support our customers efficiently."

Beacon Bear Claw Dock Truck Restraints Can Help Lower Insurance Premiums

0
0
A leading supplier in the loading dock industry, Beacon provides Truck Restraints that can assist in reducing accidents at the dock and also reduce insurance premium costs, consult with your insurance advisor for available insurance discounts. Beacon designed one of the first electrical-mechanical restraints back in 1984 named the Bear Claw.  As a second design the Bear Claw Manual Truck Restraint was a thin design that allowed for more maneuverability at the dock area, US Patent 5388947.  This thin design allowed for easy removal of snow and ice when necessary.  Since then restraints across the industry have become an important part in dock safety.  These units are designed to attach by floating with the ICC bar of the tractor trailer, preventing a truck from departing too soon.  This helps reduce the accidental drive away of a tractor trailer while a forklift or dock worker is still inside the trailer.

Throughout the years the industry has changed and so do the designs of the Trailer Restraints.  Today, Beacon offers the BMVR Manual Restraint Series and the BEVR Electric-Mechanical Truck Restraint Series.  The BMVR Series is a manual push rod operation, while the BEVR Series is an electric push button, 115 volt, 1 phase operation.  Traffic signal dock lights are available for the inside and outside, to advise when it is safe to enter the truck or depart and drive away from the loading dock area.  Driver warning signs are standard.  Each unit is designed with 50,000 lbs. of restraint draw pull.

Manual and electric dock restraints are designed to be used with a dock bumper projection of 4” to 6”.  A larger dock bumper projection, including the 15” edge of dock leveler bumper, will require the block-out option.  This option will allow the restraint and hook to extend further out from the dock wall so the hook will attached to the ICC bar of the trailer.  If the dock approach has a 6% or larger declined approach, the block-out is necessary for the hook to attach to the ICC bar.
